<Tech Trend>Double-edged Effects of Deepfake

In 2017, a member of Reddit, a well-known entertainment, social, and news website, named "deepfakes" posted a celebrity forged video synthesized by AI, which marked the beginning of the technology known as Deepfake. The term "Deepfake" is a combination of "Deep Learning" and "Fake," referring to a technique that utilizes artificial intelligence deep learning models. The principle behind it involves two neural networks competing against each other, undergoing iterative optimization training, resulting in generated content that is difficult to distinguish from real individuals.

Initially, Deepfake technology was primarily used for promotional and creative purposes, with most videos clearly stating their falseness. Moreover, Deepfake has even been used to fill in the gaps that were otherwise impossible to achieve. One of the most famous applications was seen in Hollywood movies like "Furious 7" and "Star Wars," where the late Paul Walker's character was completed by his brother and seamlessly integrated into the film using Deepfake technology, ultimately allowing the movie to be completed and released.

However, despite the seemingly harmless and well-intentioned nature of this technology, it has brought forth numerous legal issues and information risks. With the advancement of the technology, anyone can easily create fake videos or fake voices, potentially including malicious intent. Since Deepfake can mimic anyone's appearance and voice, it means that anyone, especially public figures, can be placed in false situations, resulting in reputational damage. Additionally, Deepfake technology can be abused for political manipulation, misinformation, and in the business sector, serving as examples of its negative impacts. The closest impact on ordinary individuals would be fraud committed through Deepfake technology.

Frauds perpetrated through Deepfake can be mainly categorized into three types. Firstly, there are phone scams that primarily involve impersonating the voices of relatives or friends to deceive individuals and obtain money and personal information. Scammers not only mimic the voice but also the speaking style, intonation, and accent. Secondly, there are video call scams. Since Deepfake technology can synthesize videos and voices, it means that you may receive a video call that appears to be from someone you know. The third type is blackmail scams, predominantly accomplished by synthesizing explicit photos or videos to intimidate and extort the victims.

In the evolving world of the internet, where discerning the truth becomes increasingly challenging, Deepfake is just one of the problems faced by today's technological society. How can laws and social norms keep up with this phenomenon? How can the involved copyright and ethical issues be addressed? These are crucial topics that require in-depth discussion and validation.
